Realistic Southwest Images
Expressed in Colored Pencil, Watercolor, Pen & Ink
I portray a piece of everyday life in the Southwest, of peacefulness and contemplation. Simple seeming things: sunsets, color, the smoothness of a water pitcher, the coarseness of wood that has cracked, the texture of a wall; these things entice me. I am intrigued by people: waiting, looking for something, contemplating. These are the interesting things I want to portray in my art. I strive to show a sense of tranquility, of sadness and happiness, both at the same time. I include thoughts of where I have been, what will come, and the present. I look at how color interacts, whether it's in the designs and folds of blankets and fabric, the bright colors and patterns of Talavera pottery, or nature's own play with color and shadows. When I am drawing, I capture a moment in my mind of what I perceive the world to be.
